Antique - 1860s Salt Glazed Stoneware - Stamped M Woodruff Cortland NY - 2 Gal Crock - 9.5 x 9.5 Inches - EXC. Authentic antique two-gallon, salt-glazed stoneware crock made in the 1860s by Maurice Woodruff of Cortland, New York. Exterior is a speckled sand/beige, interior is a dark black-brown. Please also see our notes (below), Condition Description and photographs. Crock measures 9 1/2" tall x 9 1/2" in diameter at bottom edge and 10 wide from handle to handle and across the top/rim. Notes adapted from online sources: Stoneware production styles of New York State mirrored those of New England potters: potters began with an aesthetic reminiscent of New York City potters then moved on to finer, straight-sided forms adorned with bright cobalt designs. Decoration could range from simple florals to wild decorations of animals or other more unusual themes. Just a few of the key potters/potteries from this later period include John Burger and son of Rochester, the White family of Utica, Reidinger and Caire in Poughkeepsie, William MacQuoid of Manhattan, and Madison Woodruff of Cortland.
