Antique 3 Gallon Stoneware Crock & Cover Underwood Fort Edward NY with Magnificent Blue Cobalt Bird Decoration. The base crock part measures 9 1/2" tall, the bottom is 11 1/2" across. It is incised with a 3 for 3 gallons. There are a few edge chips and a couple small age lines - please check my 12 photos for a detailed appraisal. The inside is coated with a white chalky material that easily flakes off. Not perfect but certainly plenty to work with and important enough to warrant a fine restoration in my opinion. The cobalt bird mark is very impressive. Guaranteed a genuine antique 1865 era Fort Edward stoneware crock. Lid cover is original and fits fine, it also has some edge chips. The manufacture of stoneware was a major industry in Fort Edward beginning in 1858. Otto Lewis was the first potter to locate here with many firms being formed soon after. George Satterlee opened the Fort Edward Pottery Co. Michael Mory joined the firm in 1861 to form Satterlee & Mory. Underwood ran a pottery firm which opened in 1865 and closed in 1867.

Ran from 1867 to 1872 on the site of the former Underwood Pottery. In 1872, Haxstun withdrew from Ottman and the firm became known as the Ottman Brothers. In 1875, a pottery opened on the corner of Broadway and Argyle Street under the ownership of Haxstun and Company. The Fort Edward Stoneware Association was formed in February of 1883 by a group of pottery manufacturers.

Unlike the former stoneware manufacturers, the Hilfinger produced earthenware pottery from native clay. The item "Antique 3 Gallon Stoneware Crock & Cover Underwood Fort Edward NY Cobalt Bird" is in sale since Sunday, March 05, 2017.
