This is an Antique Four Gallon Red Wing Lazy 8 / Beesting Salt Glazed Stoneware Crock. PLEASE NOTE: We do are very knowledgeable about Red Wing, nor crocks in general. Consequently at the time of the original listing, I had some equivocation as to the specifics of the identification. A knowledgeable ebayer kindly took the time to provide the identification details below, and that was much appreciated! The cobalt design on this salt glazed crock, a lazy 8/target, is commonly referred to as a beesting.

It would have been made about 1890 +/- a few years; certainly before 1897 when Red Wing Stoneware switched their kilns from salt glaze to the zinc (white) glaze process. I do not know if this crock originally had a lid or not. This heavy crock weighs about 19 pounds. It is about 12 1/4" tall with a 10" inner diameter and an 11 1/2 outer diameter at the rim. Using the inside measurements and an online fluid volume calculator, I learned that the volume is four gallons.

I could not find any marks on the side or bottom of the crock beyond the Lazy 8. Condition The crock is in good condition with the following issue to be noted. There are quite a number of spots of variation in the color and patina on the outside as seen. Four separate photos allow you to see the front, back, and each side. Please review them and make your own assessment of the condition.

There are two chips out of the crock. One is adjacent to the bottom edge. The other, smaller one is just above one of the handles. Both of these are shown in closeup photos, circled in blue. The chip near the bottom can be seen from several different angles in multiple photos.

The crock is offered as found / as seen / as described. To view a wide variety of antique, vintage and contemporary items. Doing that is against U.

We pride ourselves on multiple, large, clear photos. Please scrolldown past the description to view any additional photos. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution.
