Up for sale is this antique (probably)1870-80s C & H Hast... Dealers in Groceries & Produce Cumberland MD salt glazed stoneware merchant jar/crock with cobalt blue stencil & freehand decoration.

Im thinking its of Pennsylvania originprobably Greensboro. Its in as is, as found, as photographed, what you see is what you get condition. The writing on the jar is somewhat fuzzy. I cant recall seeing another example with this particular merchants name on it. I love that There is a substantial crack that runs along the back of this jar.

It looks to have started with a chip and then traveled upwardall the way to the top lip and down inside. It also goes downward from the chip and then spiders out to the left and another vein going down to the bottom. It doesnt appear to have traveled across the bottom that I can see. There is mottled surface staining throughout. There are a couple small surface chips/flakes, manufacturers imperfections like glaze pops, lines in the surface, kiln burnsthere appears to be a tiny hairline coming from one of the burns, but I cant really tell for sureits a dark line and I couldnt feel anything with my fingernail.

With the crack being what it is, its kind of hard to believe that there are no chips to the top/lip of the jar. There is staining from use to the interior of the jar.

There is a manufacturers X on the bottom. It weighs approximately 5 lbs.

It measures approximately 10 1/8 high, is 5 3/4 across the top and 6 across the bottom. It a great piece for restoration. It displays beautifully and a person would never know it was wounded until they turned it around.

It would be a fabulous addition to someones stoneware collectionespecially if youre a Maryland collector. I hope someone will give it a new home!!!

I will take extra care with this pieceI want it to get to the new owner in one piece!! Thanks so much for looking, God Bless, and happy shopping. The item "Antique C&H Hast Salt Glazed Stoneware Merchant Jar-Crock, Cobalt, Cumberland MD" is in sale since Wednesday, July 17, 2019.
