2- gallon Antique primitive salt glazed stoneware jar with blue wisps. Antique jars like this were used in the 1800's to store food. This is basically the Tupperware of the 19th Century! Prepared food that would be stored in jars like this, could have been both wet or dry foods, preserves, fruits, veggies or perhaps types of special grains or meals. This jar is 1 foot plus 3/8 inches tall and 7-3/4 inches wide in diameter.

Net weight is 10 pounds and 6 ounces. The jar has these wisps of fronds extending from the lip downward done by hand and brush with blue cobalt glaze. The blue decoration is on both the front and back sides. This was most likely made in Pennsylvania or in Maryland in the mid 1800's.

The potter used a grey gritty clay and beveled the jar under the lip to have a secure place to tie down a coverlet which would have been used over a wooden lid. The coverlet kept the contents from evaporating and might have been cloth soaked in wax or the equivalent.

There is a short hairline on the bottom side edge (see picture 9). There is lip chipping from use (see pictures 10, 11 &12).

No other chips or cracks. Collectors love these jars and some have shelves, hutches or corner cupboard just filled with all different designs from the different potteries of the day. The jar is fully functional and does not leak at all.
