Antique Saltglaze Grey & Blue Stoneware Confit Crock 19th Century

  

Great old "Confit" crock perfect for a duck. It has beautiful colors with the Artists signature image on both sides, and applied handles.

Years ago before refrigeration, they rendered the duck fat and then cook a heavily seasoned duck slowly. Once the duck was cooked, it would be cut into pieces and placed in a crock like this one and then covered in duck fat.

It could be stored for months and some say the longer the better. The history of "Duck Confit" and many recipes can be found on the Internet.

Were unsure of the origin, possibly Pennsylvania Dutch, German, or French. It is 8 1/2" tall, by 8" wide at the handles, and in great condition. There is a hairline crack on the bottom (see the photos). Add this to your antique kitchen wares today or give as a great gift. We are liquidating several estates simultaneously.
