Description : An antique, dated 1804 Boston Baked Bean Crock or Stoneware Storage Jar, 1-Gallon capacity, attributed to Frederick Carpenter, Charlestown, Massachusetts, early-1800s. Wheel-thrown, Ovoid form with tooled/incised shoulder, applied loop handles and integrated inner ledge for a lid (not present). Decorated with an ochre/iron oxide glaze with brushed cobalt handle terminals; base and rim have been dipped. Mineral or Albany Slip interior. Impressed on the collar and upper shoulder, simply: BOSTON / 1804.His wares are highly sought-after by advanced collectors. See Internet for further information on the maker. Condition : Rim with moderate utilitarian wear, including perimeter chips, soiling, etc. Handle on left side has been professionally restored. Scattered glaze flakes, pot stones, iron pings noted on the body, most appear to be in-the-firing.
Base with expected wear and soiling from use, including two shallow flakes near the center (see close-ups). Inherent glaze and surface imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. The inner and outer rim diameters are 5-1/2 and 6-1/4, respectively.
