Stoneware Crock with Folk Art Standing Lion decoration, 5-Gallon capacity, New York State origin, ca. A tall, wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with tooled rim and applied lug handles. Impressed below the rim with a cobalt-washed stamp: HUBBELL & CHESBRO / GEDDES, N.

Front features a sphinx-like Lion, artistically executed in bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt. The decoration is (paradoxically) both Folky yet entirely Refined at the same. Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. Literature : Published in: Warman's Antiques & Collectibles 2011 Price Guide by Mark F. 212 (see close-up, photo #12).

Background : The highlight of the 19thC traveling circus was the Menagerie ; an exhibition of exotic animals including Lions, Tigers, Camels, Zebras and others. Post Civil War menageries traveling though New York State included Isaac Van Amburgh's and of course Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey Circus.

For most, it was the first time ever seeing a Lion. A traveling menagerie likely served as inspiration for the decorator on this example. The decorator of this crock also slip-trailed a few nearly identical Standing Lions for John Burger Rochester, NY (about 80mi west). The Lion motif has always remained one of the most coveted and highly-prized designs in American Stoneware. See Internet for further information. Condition : Professional restoration to glaze loss on rim and body, both handles and a few minor cobalt spots. Some areas of glaze loss noted on interior Albany Slip. Expected wear and a shallow chip on base noted for descriptive accuracy. This commanding 5-Gallon H&C Lion displays brilliantly; a very nice opportunity for the advanced collector.

See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description.

Measures approximately 12-1/2"H x 13"W overall with a base diameter of 11-3/4. The inner and outer rim diameters are 10-3/4" and 12-1/2", respectively.
