C1860 3 Gallon Handled Stoneware Crock Marked J. Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped J. HAMILTON, " Western Pennsylvania origin, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with incised banding around midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed vine design at the shoulder over a "3 flanked by vertical swiggles on the lower half.Minor chips on outside edge of rim and one on edge of base. NOTE There is a complete break (repaired) on back 1/3 of crock - from just under the J. HAMILTON stamp and across middle of the bottom of crock. Before the old repair, the crock would have been in two solid pieces. The piece is solid with the repair. Despite the break, this is a beautiful early Western Pennsylvania stoneware crock with beautiful decoration and design elements.
