Wildly rampaging tornado and a scripted number 4 above the design, all in cobalt blue underglaze color. I think it may well be an early unmarked Red Wing piece as several knowledgable folks I've shown it to also think so, but, no way to guarantee that fact.I absolutely love these early crocks with the big elephant type ears, don't you - they look so primitive and cool!! Measures about 12 inches tall and about 11-3/4 inches or so in diameter ear to ear, slightly squatty shape, wider at the bottom and top, a little narrower in the middle. Superb contrast with the dark chunky cobalt design against the light speckled oatmeal body makes it really stand out in a display group!! The condition of the crock is excellent with no serious chips, cracks or repairs, a couple very small and quite typical chips here and there, nothing major at all, a couple unglazed areas also in the making, its a very solid piece. There are some imperfections to the body of the crock but nothing that was not done in the making of this fine piece. Oatmeal color with an overall salt and pepper speckled texture - very beautifully crude!! This very nice stoneware crock displays great and will make an excellent addition to someone's collection. These early free hand decorated crocks or stoneware pieces are becoming increasingly hard to find, this is a nice piece and worthy of any stoneware collection especially with such an attractive unusual cobalt design.
