RARE EARLY AMERICAN 1800'S BALTIMORE MARYLAND STONEWARE 3 GALLON JAR COBALT BLUE DECORATION. The featured item represents an early Baltimore stoneware jar that measures approximately 13 1/4" tall, 6 1/8" across the top and 7 1/4 in diameter at the bottom. I'd like to start with the condition of the piece. The jar has cracks pruning around the body and the bottom. I've tried to include as many pictures as I can, revealing the issued areas.
Don't hesitate to ask for additional photos or if you have any questions. There is also a hole on the bottom but not all the way.
The opening's rim has "dents" that are likely manufacturing flaws. Some age related wear like scuffs, marks, scratches and glaze chips. There are some other production flaws and imperfections typical for this type of ware. The interior could use some cleaning. I live in Virginia Beach, VA.
It has its differences and it's been a while since the sale but the American stoneware market is still strong. On the other side, this is a larger 3 gallon jar. The jar has an ovoid form and two "tab" handles. It is decorated in underglazed slip-trailed cobalt blue, depicting on both sides a planter with a plant. The planter is decorated with dots and the ends of the stems are also dotted resembling grapes or berries.
The color is adorned with zig-zag band. The lower end of the jar is tooled. The handles are brushed with cobalt blue. One sides is marked on the top with "3" in a circle.
Nevertheless of the damages, the jar is truly beautiful and an amazing example of highly decorated early American stoneware.
