W. H. Farrar/ Geddes, NY Stoneware Jug in Exceptional Decoration- Provenance
"Outstanding Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Bird and Floral Decoration, Stamped "W. / GEDDES, NY, circa 1860, cylindrical jug with rounded shoulder and tapered spout molding, decorated with a large slip-trailed and brushed design of a bird with shaded wing and heavily-detailed body and tail, seated atop a stylized ground composed of numerous swags. Bird faces a slip-trailed flowering plant with heavily-shaded petals. Slip-trailed "2" with flourish to the bird's right.
A strong example of the folky and highly-prized Farrar bird motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found in New York. Some spots of fry to cobalt. Minor contact mark to front.
1 1/8 flake to underside at edge. Jug remains in same condition!! 8" diameter x 14" tall appr. See Photos for better description.
