ANTIQUE ONE GALLON COBALT SLIP AND TOBACCO SPIT DECORATED SALT GLAZED STONEWARE CROCK. It measures 9-1/2" tall with a diameter of 5-1/4" at the top and 5 at the bottom and weighs 5 pounds.
The crock is unique because it shows both cobalt slip and tobacco spit decoration. Made by a less commonly known pottery, it features. A nice variable color gray glaze on the exterior. A 3/4'' slightly flared rim.
Incised decoration just below the top rim. Cobalt slip leaf cluster decorated on one side. Signed Smith & Day Norwalk, Conn on the shoulder. Tobacco spit decorated to the right and below the cobalt decoration. Potter's finger grooves visible inside.
The crock is in good structural condition showing only surface hairlines on the sides and top rim repairs. A nice unique piece of mid 19th century salt glazed pottery!
