Up for sale is this antique H. Behrens, Wheeling, West Virginia salt glazed stoneware merchant butter crock jar. This crock is a little one and these guys are awesome to own and hard to find. The stencil is pretty nice. Id date it to around the 1880s, give or take a few years.
Judging from the color of the jar and stencil, I think it was made in Pennsylvania. Its in as is, as found, as photographed, what you see is what you get condition.
There is wear/rubbing to to the paint and surface. There are old, mottled stainsnothing too terrible. There is a glaze skip on the outer lip and two small chips on the inside liptheyre not bad at all in my opinion.
There is a manufacturers dip in the right side of the crock, which makes it out-of-round. The interior is done in brown Albany slip; there are great finger rings inside. There is a very thin hairline crack that appears to start in the E in Behrens. It travels downward and spiders off to the right. The main crack continues to travel down and then branches off to the left and then diagonally upward, ending in the floral stencil from what I can see. The main line continues downward and ends on the bottommaybe 3 across. The main line goes through to the interior.
The jar measures approximately 5 7/8 high and is approximately 5 7/8 across the top and 6 across the bottom. It would be a super addition to someones West Virginia stoneware collection!!
