Up for sale is this antique (probably)1870-80s P. Kurtz of Pittsburgh salt glazed stoneware merchant jar/crock with dark cobalt bluealmost black writing.
Im thinking its of Pennsylvania originprobably Greensboro. Its in as is, as found, as photographed, what you see is what you get condition. The writing on the jar is blurryits hard to make out all the words.
Pittsburgh, PA and a #2 capacity marktwo gallon. I dont ever remember seeing another example with this particular merchants name on it. Im not saying they dont exist, I just dont think Ive seen another. There are no cracks or large chipsthere are a few very small flakes or flea-bites, but nothing that detracts other than some dark, mottled surface stains from use and some interior flaking to the Albany slip. There are little pitted areas throughoutfrom manufacture. The surface of this jar has the desired orange peel appearance and feel many collectors love. There are interior and exterior stains that may clean upI washed it with Dawn and dried it.There is a manufacturers straw mark on one side of the rim. Its not a perfect piece, but its old and shows normal wear commensurate with age and use. It weighs approximately 8 lbs. It measures approximately 12 high, is 6 across the top opening, 7 1/4 across the top, outside rim to outside rim, and is 7 1/2 across the bottom. I have never been to Pittsburgh in my life, but I loved this jar when I bought it.
I collect West Virginia stoneware because Im from WV and feel a connection to local pieces. And that you will love it just as much as I love my West Virginia stoneware.
