Description : A Early American Ovoid Stoneware Jar or Storage Crock with primitive date or cobalt decoration, 1-Gallon capacity, Northeastern US origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, Ovoid form with tooled rim, flared collar and applied lug handles. Tooled collar with integrated inner ledge for a lid (not present). Decorated on the shoulder with primitive Cobalt Brushwork; possibly a date with underline 18?
In addition, heavy cobalt accents highlight each handle terminal. Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior.
Condition : Very Good to Excellent with attractive form and strong color. There is some in-the-making roughness on the upper rim and a small clay separation on one handle terminal (right side, see close-ups). No chips, cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy.
Displays brilliantly; highly appropriate for any collection of Stoneware or Americana. See photos for complete details and please consider them as part of the description. Approximate 1-Gallon capacity; measures 9-3/4"H x 7-1/2"W overall with a base diameter of 5. The inner and outer rim diameters are 4-1/4" and 5", respectively.
