Description : An exceptional Stoneware Jar or Storage Crock with desirable Pecking Chicken decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, New York State origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder and applied lug handles. Tooled rim with integrated inner ledge for a lid. Impressed in the shoulder with an illegible stamp: looks like a Fort Edward example to me, but could be convinced otherwise.
Front features a "Pecking Chicken" on a stylized bed of corn in bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Shiny, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. Note: This decoration is commonly found on traditional, straight-sided crocks; a Chicken on a handled Jar is a fairly rare find. Condition : Shallow handle chips, as shown, and some expected wear on the inner rim where a lid would rest; otherwise Excellent. No cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. Very clean inside and out. Displays brilliantly; highly appropriate for any collection of Stoneware or Americana. See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Approximate 2-Gallon capacity; measures 11-1/2"H x 8-1/2"W overall. The inner and outer rim diameters are 5-1/8" and 6-1/4", respectively.
