Found In a special and serious North Carolina collection. Part of a collection I have acquired with over 20 churns and other stoneware items... This is only the first offering of the group. The most beautiful Example of this early design from N. White & Son, The color is absolutely stunning! Just look at the pictures from all sides. Nice delicately applied artwork in cobalt blue (more on this below).

This is an entirely original Antique example with tremendous character! It has Ear Type Handles. Made from light gray clay, it has a nice flared out rim and a circular incised line about 3 below the rim; and is glazed inside and out. Perfectly intact, this is a Museum Quality piece, and destined only for the most serious of collectors demanding only the finest example for thier collections. Certainly an original period antique and a rare acquisition, but that alone is not what makes this one what it is...

It's the artwork folks! What determines what comprises the best of the best? Sure, overall soundness and the lack of damage matters... But then there is the design. You will see these types of bird & florals (very popular motif) on this makers wares, and others...

It's the fineness of detail in the design application of the cobalt blue bird and florals. Most you will see are overly applied, and many have details blurred or blotted out, or even missing. Look at those other examples... And then look closely at this one. The design application most certainly was done by someone with a delicate hand, and with great care. The bird is perfect in every way, with no over application, and is missing no areas of either the body or the tail.

The florals are delicately placed and in full completeness. The raised definition of the cobalt design, and certainly, you can feel it when running your fingers over the design. Make the comparisons, and you will see why this one is a GEM, and must have been very well kept over the years... To have survived this perfectly.

If you are a serious collector wanting only the best of the best... Then this is destined to be a focal point in your display.
