An impressive salt-glazed Stoneware Crock with A+ Cobalt Floral decoration, 6-Gallon capacity, New York State origin, ca. Cylindrical, wheel-thrown form with tooled rim and applied lug handles. Impressed with a cobalt-washed makers stamp reading: JOHN BURGER / ROCHESTER with a freehand Slip-trailed capacity to the right. Front features a highly-detailed Double Floral in the boldest of Slip-Trailed Cobalt.
I would consider the Floral Decorations of John Burger and Frederick Stetzenmeyer! Among the most artistically executed of all American Stoneware. Condition : Several portions of the surface, including a vertical crack on reverse and minor touch-ups to the decoration, have been professionally restored back to Excellent overall condition, and there is a small chip on the inner rim.
This is arguably one of the most detailed Burger Cobalt Florals I have seen. Displays brilliantly with exceptional color and zero fry on the decoration. This commanding 6G will feature prominently in any collection of Antique Stoneware or Americana.
See photos for complete details and close-ups. Please consider them as part of the description. Measures 13-3/4W x 14-1/4H overall with a base diameter of 12-1/4. The inner and outer rim diameters are 11-1/4 and 12-1/2, respectively; weighs approximately 20 lbs! Good Luck, thanks for looking, and be sure to bookmark my Auctions, listed and ending daily.
