A Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Crock with Bird decoration and Boston, MA Merchant Advertising, 2-Gallon capacity, New York State origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with tooled rim and applied lug handles. Impressed with a cobalt-washed stamp below the rim: E. HALL & CO / 171 BLACKSTONE ST / BOSTON / 2. Front features a plump Songbird perched on a stylized floral plume, perfectly executed in bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt.

Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. Note : This Crock was a special order for the Beantown grocer.

Based on the decoration, likely manufactured in New York State. See Internet for further information on the merchant. Condition : Rim and base with signs of wear from use, including shallow chips, flakes, rubs, etc. As shown; otherwise in Very Good to Excellent, essentially as-made condition with strong color and desirable decoration. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for complete descriptive accuracy.
