Description : A rare, stencil-decorated Stoneware Cake Crock with makers advertising, 2-Gallon capacity, Western Pennsylvania origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, slightly tapered form with tooled rim and applied lug handles.
Gray, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany or Mineral Slip interior. Front features a bold Cobalt Stencil reading: HAMILTON AND / JONES / GREENSBORO, PA. With additional freehand Brushed Cobalt highlights at the rim, base and each handle terminal. There is a freehand 2 capacity designation to the right of the stencil work.
This appears to be one of their earlier examples. Marked H&J wares are highly sought-after by American Stoneware collectors.

A network of very faint lines noted on the reverse, lower (see close-up, photo #12). Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for complete descriptive accuracy.
