Description : A Early American Ovoid Stoneware Jar or Storage Crock with impressed and highlighted maker's mark and primitive cobalt decoration, 1-Gallon capacity, New York State origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, Ovoid form with tooled rim and applied lug handles. Tooled collar with integrated inner ledge for a lid (not present). Impressed in the shoulder with a cobalt-washed stamp: N. The decoration appears to be a freehand "1" with two small drops below. Shiny, in addition a series of parallel incised "guidelines" are visible on the body. Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. A highly sought after size and form by this maker. Condition : One small rim flake, as shown; otherwise Excellent.
Morris Jar survives in remarkable as-made condition. No cracks, repaired damage or restoration work. It has not been cleaned. Displays brilliantly; highly appropriate for any collection of Stoneware or Americana. See photos for complete details and close-ups.
