Description : A fine, salt-glazed Stoneware Jar or Crock with Cobalt Floral decoration, 2-Gallon capacity, Northeastern US origin, ca. Wheel-thrown, squat ovoid form with tooled rim and applied lug handles. Impressed with a cobalt-washed makers stamp below the rim: NICHOLS & BOYNTON / BURLINGTON, VT.
The pottery was under the name Nichols & Alford prior, and bought-out by the Ballard brothers (OL & AK) shortly thereafter. The Nichols & Boynton mark is considered rare by Bill Ketchum. See Ketchums American Stoneware , p. 45 or Internet for further information on the short-lived Chittenden County partnership.
Front features a large, fan-like Floral Blossom on a leafy stem, artistically executed in bold, Brushed Cobalt. Additional heavy brushed cobalt accents highlight the handle terminals.
Super clean Albany Slip interior. Condition : Some expected base wear with a few shallow flakes; otherwise in Very Good to Excellent, as-made condition with strong color and fine decoration. Inherent glaze, surface and firing imperfections noted for descriptive accuracy. No cracks, repaired damage or restoration work.
Displays brilliantly; highly-appropriate for any collection of Antique Stoneware or Americana. See photos for complete details and please consider them as part of the description. Measures 9-1/4H x 9W overall with a base diameter of 8. The inner and outer rim diameters are 7 and 8-1/4, respectively.
