A Slip-Decorated Stoneware Jug and Crock pair with bold Cobalt Floral Decorations, 4G and 5G, respectively, attributed to Somerset Potters Works, Massachusetts, ca. The Bristol County manufactory was operated by Leonard and Benjamin G. See Internet for further information. The Jug : Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with eased shoulder and applied strap handle. Front features a large Double Floral with other flourishes, artistically executed in Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Impressed 4 on the shoulder with a cobalt wash. Shiny, Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. Measures 17-1/2H x 10-1/4W overall and weighs approximately 18 lbs! The Crock : Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with tooled rim and applied lug handles. Front features a similar Somerset Floral with flourishes flanking a 5 in bold, Slip-Trailed Cobalt. Salt-Glazed exterior; Albany Slip interior. Measures 13-1/4W x 12-1/4H overall with a base diameter of 12-1/4. The inner and outer rim diameters are 11 and 12-1/2, respectively. Condition : Jug with expected wear on the base and a few shallow flakes on the spout, as shown; otherwise Very Good to Excellent with strong color.

Crock with inner rim chips and a tight 4 rim hairline (rear, center), as shown; otherwise Very Good to Excellent. Both with typical surface, glaze and firing imperfections (stack marks, scars, etc) in-the-making. It is rare to find 4 and 5-Gallon stoneware examples in this condition Note: This Jug filled with just water would weigh in excess of 50 lbs!
