This a is beautifully thrown, symmetrical and thin-walled Baltimore dry storage crock decorated with three nicely hand painted cobalt unopened tulip flower buds on a shiny, brown/buff color salt glaze. The glaze has a nice, subtle orange peel texture created in the firing process. The neck has a deep inset so a string or cord could be tied to hold a cloth over the mouth. It would have been used to store dry goods such as sugar, flour, cornmeal, or other kitchen staples.
The clay is gray and on the base is wire cut. Collecting antique stoneware has become more popular with pieces being found in barns, old houses, cellars and at estate sales but most stoneware coming onto the market is damaged in some way. This handsome, well-proportioned Baltimore crock has nice cobalt decorations and is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or restorations which makes it a rare find and a definite keeper! It could be a terrific addition to a collection or an outstanding standalone piece!
I describe every item as well as I can but remember that the photos are part of the description. I will do everything I can to resolve any issues.
I have more great antique and vintage art pottery stoneware to list, so please check back.
