Pictured is a rare blue decorated stoneware advertising merchant crock offered for sale. The six (6) gallon crock is freehand decorated with a whimsical floral design & is incised in very small 1/4" block lettering "HERRICK & CANNON -- AKRON, O. Quick research on the internet shows the mercantile partnership flourished from 1868 to 1887. The business was located at 108 South Howard Street in downtown Akron. South Howard Street no longer exists & is now recognized as the beginning of North Main Street, just south of Perkins Street.
An early 1870 letterhead invoice is pictured online for the firm. They are described as importers & dealers in China, Crockery, Glassware, Lamps, Willow-Ware, Table Cutlery, Bird Cages, Children's Carriages, Silver-Plated Ware, & Home Furnishing Goods. Herrick & his brother-in-law W. Cannon were a major mainstay of their business. The crock measures 13 3/4" in height and 11 1/2" in base diameter. It's in excellent condition with no nicks, hairlines, or repairs whatsoever. As seen, there is a single shallow thumb nail size chip on the interior rim, no other issues. This is a unique example such that other marked examples are not known or available. This may have been used for window display to advertise & promote their inventory of utilitarian stoneware storage vessels. An attractive, substantial crock from northeastern Ohio.....
