VERY RARE EARLY to MID 19TH CENTURY AME RI CAN FOLK ART ANTIQUE (POSSIBLY OHIO) PRIMITIVE THREE GALLON, SALT- GLAZED PUTTY WHITE & SLIP DECORATED COBALT BLUE BUTTER CHURN STONEWARE UPRIGHT CERAMIC CROCK, featuring SLAB- CONSTRUCTED SIDE HANDLES, WHEEL- THROWN BODY, WIRE CUT BASEPLATE & SEPIA BROWN GLAZED INTERIOR. The stoneware butter churn ceramic crock was discovered in rural northwestern Connecticut along the Massachusetts border in an early post & beam center chimney cape farmhouse.
It wasn't found with its original wooden lid or center wooden wooden spoked paddle. Early to mid-19th century Ame ri can folk art antique primitive wheel-thrown, salt glazed stoneware ceramic butter churn crocks. 15 1/2" in overall Height x 7 3/4" top opening Diameter. X 7 1/2" base Width x 9" body Width.In extraordinary, incredibly well-preserved, near museum-quality condition. There are no hairline cracks, ceramic loss or edge flea-bites that usually plague the wire-cut bottoms and tops of these early to mid 19th century, Ame ri can folk art, antique, primitive, hand decorated salt-glazed stoneware ceramic butter churn crocks. Both slab-constructed side lifting handles attached to the wheel-thrown body upon the crock's inception and time of production, are intact, complete and unbroken and don't suffer any loss or flea-bites to their edges. The original wooden lid and spoked wooden butter center post were not found when the stoneware butter churn was discovered in the back pantry of the early home it was removed from. With hand decorated, hand painted cobalt blue slip floral motif, with a hand scribed #3, denoting the crock could hold up to three (3) gallons of butter milk used to make butter.
The wire cut bottom has clean edges as well as the rolled top pouring spout. The slab-constructed, attached side lifting/carrying handles are intact. A truly rare, great piece and a terrific early to mid 19th century Ohio River Valley antique cultural artifact. You will look high and low, far and wide before you find a similar piece in this kind of exceptionally well-preserved overall antique condition.
