DONAGHHO, FREDERICKTOWN, PA, SALT GLAZED + COBALT BLUE STENCILED, 1/2 GALLON STONEWARE WAX SEALER CANNING JAR MADE ca. Alexander Donaghho was one of only a handful of potters who made blue decorated/stenciled salt glazed stoneware in the mid-1800's in the southwestern Pennsylvania town of Fredericktown.
He operated in Fredericktown from ca. 1855 to 1870 at which time he moved to Parkersburg, WV where he continued to make stoneware for another 30 years A. Donaghho stoneware with the Parkersburg attribution are relatively easy to find. While in Fredericktown he partnered with several different people in the 1855 to 1865 time frame but was on his own from approximately the end of the Civil War to 1870. For more details see Phil Schaltenbrand's 1996 book titled Stoneware of Southwestern Pennsylvania , page 33ff. As Phil states in his book, few marked pieces from Fredericktown potteries are seen today. This 1/2 gallon canning jar is 8 inches in height and measures 4-1/2 inches in outside diameter at the top and 5-3/8 inches in diameter at the bottom. The opening in the top is 2-3/4 inches in diameter. It weighs just over 3 lbs.
The condition of the jar is as follows. The blue stenciled letters are sharp and fully dark blue and, thus, easily readable. The salt glaze is excellent - reasonably uniform gray color with some darker gray splotches and still bright over the entire surface. Albany slip interior shows very little if any use; no stains or scale are present. Some small chips around and under the rim are present (examine photos closely). There are 3 very fine hairline cracks shown in photos #6-8 that travel from the rim to approximately the middle of the jar. I tested all 3 of these by filling the jar with water.
Nonetheless, water does not'gush' out of the cracks thus indicating that they are very small making'hairline' an appropriate description of the cracks. This is a rare piece of stoneware in reasonably good condition. It will be double boxed and wrapped thoroughly with padding. DONAGHHO, FREDERICKTOWN, PA 1/2 GAL.
